Bringing Engineering Practice to AI Systems

Engineers build things that work. We are trained to specify requirements, design against them, analyze risk, test, and verify the result before we put our name to it. That accountability is formal: when an engineer seals a design, they take professional responsibility for it. This practice does not stop at the physical world. A digital engineer brings the same discipline, the same judgment, and the same accountability to software and AI. This talk is about what that practice looks like for the digital engineer — how we apply engineering methodology, risk analysis, and verification to the development of AI systems, and what it means to seal and stand behind AI systems as professional engineers.

Raimund Laqua, P.Eng., PMP

Raimund Laqua, P.Eng., PMP, is the founder and principal of Lean Compliance and one of the first licensed computer engineers in Ontario. Over more than thirty years he has applied engineering practice across safety- and mission-critical industries, including oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, financial services, and government. He chairs the Digital Engineering Committee for Engineers for the Profession (E4P) and serves on OSPE's AI in Engineering Task Force, and he is a national advocate for digital engineering as a recognized professional discipline encompassing software, cybersecurity, AI, and digital systems engineers are now being asked to build. His work focuses on bringing engineering methodology, risk, and assurance to the development of digital and AI systems.
